Raising Quail- A New Venture

17 days ago we got 2 1/2 dozen quail eggs and a dozen babies. We immediately set the eggs in the incubator and and got the babies settled in the brooder. The babies are ready to move outside and today the chicks started hatching. So much fun to watch those eggs rocking and rolling and pop! out comes a baby.

They are so tiny! 3 so far and a lot of activity going on in there.

Why quail? Here on the homestead we strive to be as self sufficient as possible. Quail have been on our let's try and see list for a while. They start laying as early as 7 weeks, producing around 300 eggs a year. They can be butchered between 7 and 10 weeks. They take up little space and are pretty hardy. We are still working on our setup. It's pretty good right now but I would love an outdoor run that is much more natural. We hope to butcher a few of the chicks we got in 5 or 6 weeks.

Always learning new things or at least trying to.. on the homestead!
