Long Hay Day

We  knew today was going to be a long one. It was. Earlier this week hubby mowed another hay field. The field was newly planted last Fall and was lush and thick. All went pretty well until at bale 508 the baler sheared a pin. We had extra but it was not going well repairing so we decided to go head and put up what was already baled and worry about the rest of the hay later. There were storms in the mountains possibly headed this way and rain in the forecast for tomorrow. Our youngest son who is our right hand hay man was out of town so it was just my hubby and I here to get it in the barn. My father in law, bless him, did bale for us.

Things were going pretty smoothly. We were hauling the hay back and forth to the barn which is a mile or so down the road on wagons and trailers and then on the last 2 loads the grabber which ties 8 bales of hay together stopped tying. Sigh. Yes one of those days. So now the bales weren't secure and we had to strap them all down. We pulled the last load of hay in at 8:15 and got the last of the equipment in the barn by 9:30. Tomorrow we plan to round bale the last of it if it doesn't rain. The original plan for tomorrow was to process the meat birds that are already a week late going in the freezer.
Sometimes you just roll with it because that my friends is life on the homestead!
