More Grapes and Mowing Clover

Sis, Mom and I took a quick field trip Friday, We loaded her truck down with lots of goodies. I, always on the lookout for edible landscaping found some beautiful seedless
white grape vines. I also spied some Paw Paw trees but not even having a clue about them left them with a sad heart til I do some research. My nephew assures me they are delicious!
The white grapes were planted beside the Concord grapes. It completed the arbor that has been empty for several years. I am hopeful these will do well.

Late this afternoon hubby decided we should mow the clover field. We have an 8 day window to get it dry and if it makes we hope to replace store bought alfalfa hay with this for the pigs!

I rode for a little while in the tractor with hubby. Pretty cool watching that big machine mow!

Pasturing The Meat Birds

Today we were finally able to move the meat birds to the tractor. They will stay in it for a couple of weeks before we have to raise it up and allow them to roam since it will not hold all 35 birds.  After that they can range til processing time. Since relocating the chicken coop and yard last year we have had to put in the pasture with the juvenile ram lambs. Me thinks this may not work.

They seem pretty interested in the feed shoot. Sigh.

Racing The Rain

Lots of rain is due to roll in overnight and for the next few days. Hubby had to work so I was on my own with yard and garden work over the weekend. Lots of grass was mowed...and mowed.
My flower beds were in desperate need of the spring cleaning. Done!

I also knew that if the maters and peppers did not go in this weekend it would be a long wet wait. So sis and I cleaned out the greenhouse, planted and prayed all would be well.  We will see!

2018 Lambs

I only bred two ewes this year. With the purchase of adjoining property and all the work that will be coming in the way of fencing and pasturing I felt the need to scale back a bit. It's been a little sad though and I miss the piles of colorful leaping lambs racing each evening. 
But some lovely lambs none the less!

Beat Up By A Duck

I have another broody duck and being that I am totally sold on having ducks on the homestead I decided to let her hatch out a few eggs. Today was her first full day on the nest and I was going to mark the eggs since others having been laying in it too and I wanted to keep track of the ones not to collect. Sharpie in hand I reached down to scoot her over. Bad idea.Very bad idea. She came off that nest so fast I never saw what happened. She hit my wrist so hard with her wings I truly thought it was broken! So I thought I'd try another tactic and scoot her with my foot. Did I say bad idea already? This time she came at me and beat the pudding out of my shins. I retreated with a bruised wrist, battered shins and REALLY hurt feelings. Tomorrow I will mark the eggs while she is out feeding!

Co-op Haul and First Lambs

This morning dawned chilly and windy. I went from short pants and flip flops yesterday to sweats and boots today. (and a nice fire tonight!)

Today was errand day. Co-op pick up, bank and several other stops consumed the better part of my day. The next rainy day I will certainly have my work cut out for me repackaging all of these dried goods.

Once the truck was unloaded I headed to the barn for afternoon chores. As usual the sheep ran to greet me and one of the pregnant ewes was acting crazy. She was calling and pacing like she had lambed and lost her babies. After walking the pasture twice and taking a closer look at her I decided she must be in labor and was just stressed at being left out in the pasture alone while the others were chowing down. Sure enough once everyone settled down she went back out in the field and within the hour delivered a set of twins.
I left her to tend them for a couple of hours and late this evening brought her up to the barn where they will be protected from the cold wind. Pictures tomorrow!

Babies and Bad Weather

I was greeted this morning by a set of beautiful twin goats this morning.

Today I would not be able to leisurely enjoy their cuteness though since bad weather including high winds, heavy rain and hail were due to roll in this afternoon.
I spent the early part of the day putting up anything that might be picked up by high winds like chair cushions and flags. Then I had to haul in to the garage all the herb plants, flowers and ferns that I had purchased over the course of this past week. I was really thankful that none of these had been planted or put in pots in case of large hail.(Some stations were calling for quarter size hail) Lastly I made sure all of the animals were safe and secure in barns and shelters with extra hay to munch on.
I charged all the flashlights and phones and filled several gallon containers with water.
Just as I was finishing up, the first weather alert came across the radio with a tornado warning. It was about 30 miles south of us. We were due for it in 20 minutes. Thankfully, for us, it split before getting here and we only got the heavy rain, flickering lights and a few claps of thunder. About 3/4 inch fell in 20 minutes or so. Our neighbors to the east and west of us were not so lucky. Trees and power lines were down and many houses destroyed. Our hearts go out to them and we are once again thankful and blessed here on the homestead.
